There are two ways to register the birth of a child born abroad and have citizenship Vietnam:

• Through the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in the country where the child was born. This is the most common way to register the birth of a child born abroad. To do this, the parents must submit the following documents to the embassy or consulate:
  • A birth certificate issued by the local authorities in the country where the child was born.
  • A copy of the parents’ Vietnamese passports.
  • A copy of the parents’ marriage certificate (if applicable).
  • A completed birth registration form.
• Through the People’s Committee of the district where the child resides in Vietnam. This is only possible if the child and at least one of their parents are living in Vietnam. To do this, the parents must submit the following documents to the People’s Committee:
  • A birth certificate issued by the local authorities in the country where the child was born.
  • A copy of the parents’ Vietnamese passports.
  • A copy of the parents’ marriage certificate (if applicable).
  • A completed birth registration form.
  • A letter from the local police station confirming the child’s residence in Vietnam.

Once the parents have submitted all of the required documents, the embassy or consulate or People’s Committee will process the birth registration request. If the request is approved, the child will be issued a Vietnamese birth certificate.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind about birth registration for children born abroad and have citizenship Vietnam:

• The birth registration process can take several weeks or even months, so it is important to start the process as soon as possible.
• There may be a fee associated with birth registration.
• If the child’s parents are not married, the father will need to sign a declaration of paternity in order to register the birth.
• If the child’s parents are both Vietnamese citizens, the child will automatically be granted Vietnamese citizenship.
